The Gōjū-kai 剛柔会 founder, Gōgen Yamaguchi Sensei (山口剛玄先生) who studied under Chōjun Miyagi Sensei 宮城長順先生, unified the essential lecture points or aspects of All Japan Karate-dō Federation Gōjū-kai 全日本空手道剛柔会. The present successor, Gōshi Yamaguchi Saikō-Shihan [Supreme Master] (最高師範山口剛史範士) improved those lecture points to nurture our spirits, our Ki and our body.

Gōjū-kai 剛柔会 holds seminars for high graders (5th Dan & higher Shihan 五段師範以上) , seminars for instructors, seminars for black belts, other seminars and classes at each dojo. Goju-ryu also has classes for elders to study their health improvement and breathing method of Karate-dō at community colleges.

The contents of practices is not only learning competitive Karate 空手 techniques, but also learning seekers' mind to enjoy Karate 空手 for our whole life. We want people to learn common sense through group activities and to know the meanings of improving themselves and challenge through participating in competitions.

The core of Gōjū’s 剛柔 training, does not only consist of learning competitive Karate 空手 techniques, but also to train the mind to enjoy Karate 空手 as a way of life. We want children and adults alike to learn common sense through group activities, to know the meaning of improving themselves and challenging this concept through participating in competitions.

Gōjū-ryū's 剛柔流 basic training begins by being taught the basics of making proper fists, and preparing the student for rigorous blocking, punching / striking & kicking exercises.

Then we start seven basic forms of training;

  • Tachikata - 立ち方
  • Kamaekata - 構え方
  • Ukekata - 受け方
  • Tsukikata - 突き方
  • Uchikata - 打ち方
  • Atekata, - 当て方 and
  • Kerikata - 蹴り方

There are two basic Wazas - (Techniques); one is used for Kata - and the other is used for Jiyū-kumite 自由組手. There are also two kinds of foot movements; one is Unsoku 運足 for basic movement and the other is Tenshin 転身 and Sabaki 捌きfor Kumite 組手.

There are five groups of Katas (/),

  • Kihon-gata - 基本形 「基本型」
  • Fukyū-gata - 普及形 「普及型」
  • Kaishu-gata - 開手形 「開手型」
  • Sanshu gata - 三守形 and
  • Tokutei-gata - 持定形 「持定型」

Sanchin サンチン (三戰) and Tensho - テンショウ (転掌) are Kihon-gata 基本形. Sometimes, Tenshō テンショウ (転掌) is performed after Kaishu-gata 開手形 because it is recognized as Kaishu-gata 開手形.

In Gōjū-kai 剛柔会, Kihon-kata 基本形 consists of a pair of Go Waza, or hardness and Ju Waza, or softness. Fukyū-gata consists of 10 kinds of Taikyoku no Kata and Gekisai 1 and 2.

Tokutei-gata 特定形, which consists of Genkaku 玄鶴, Chikaku 地鶴, Tenryū 天龍 & Kōryū 黄龍 are NOT to be taught to students or utilized at competitions. The latest addition to the Gōjū-kai 剛柔会 kata family, is three Sanshu Gata 三守形; Kenshu 拳守, Shoshu 掌守, and Ryōshu 凌守. These are for the students extended training in basic techniques, and are not utilized at competitions or considered part of traditional testing curriculum.

There are various kinds of training methods, and they are broken down into the following: Kihon-kumite 基本組手, Yakusoku-kumite 約束組手 and Jiyū-kumite 自由組手. All forms of Kumite 組手are forms of training that will be done in pairs. In Kumite 組手 training we need to pay special attention to the basics, timing, distance and other more difficult techniques.

To understand Kata , there are two methods of training; Katabunkai-kumite 型分解組手 and Bunkaikata-kumite 分解型組手. In Katabunkai-kumite 型分解組手 practice, we divide kata into segments and learn the meaning of each movement. Bunkaikata-kumite 分解型組手 is the practical training and application of the above said methods, by using Kata from Gekisai ichi ゲキサイ第一 (撃碎第一) onward.

Very Important to Goju 剛柔 is the building of our basic strengths and forms of breathing. We have to determine our own ways of improving these qualities by supplementary training and exercises, even though our daily practice of Karate 空手 will aid in this. Improvement is always needed in our muscular strength, endurance and flexibility, as Karate 空手 demands that of our bodies in practice and all relevant practical applications.

The Gōjū-ryū's 剛柔流 origin is in southern part of China where people use boats for their transportation. We can't miss this point when we come to think about its characteristics. Southern people who knew about boats very much, were good at standing firmly even in an unstable boat and their standing posture became Sanchin-dachi 三戦立ち. Their soles never left a boat and they slide their feet to move. Their Waza seemed as if it came out from the ground because of this sliding movement.

Along with the original breathing "Kisoku no Donto" - 気息の呑吐, the curved movement which is based on a circle creates what is known as Muchimi ムチミ. Kisoku no Donto 気息の呑吐 is a breathing method controlling abdominal breathing and training our body from inside. We practice this breathing method by doing the Kihon kata 基本形, Sanchin サンチン (三戰) and Tenshō テンショウ (転掌) . There are two kinds of Ibuki 息吹; one is Yō Ibuki 陽息吹 and the other is In Ibuki 陰息吹. Yō Ibuki is utilized for training, and breathing is very clear. In Ibuki 陰息吹is utilized at the moment of actual fighting whereas the breath is calm and held in. It is embodied in and Han In Yō 半陽陰 doing conscious abdominal breathing. We perform enbū 演武 exercises by doing Ju-hō 柔法, Go-hō 剛法, Goju-ho 剛柔法 and Seidō-hō 静動法. Forms of breathing and movement.

Concentration on movements and breathing leads to Kikō 気功 (Qigong) practice.

Sanchin サンチン (三戰) and Tenshō テンショウ (転掌) are said to be Ritsuzen (or Ryūzen) 立禅, a standing posture with Sanchin-dachi 三戦立 and breathing that leads to a mental state of Tenchi-jin 天地人, which is ultimately the sought after state of Gōjū-ryū 剛柔流.

To accomplish this Muchimi ムチミ, Kotekitae 小手鍛え, which is a kind of Kakie カキエ and Kake 掛け is utilized. This training method is suitable for learning flexible movements to control your opponent, diminishing the shock of impact, mounting a counterattack and being aware of the changing power of strength, counteractions of the strength and using Ki .

Gōjū-ryū's 剛柔流aim is not only to improve strength and techniques but also to improve the will power and spirit. Aim at building character and at pursuit of being strong along with nurturing kindness, dignity and thoughtfulness. The founder Chōjun Miyagi Sensei 宮城長順先生 said, "Don't be struck by others, don't strike others and avoid trouble" (人に打たれず、人打たず ことなきをもととするなり) and its spirit was seeking for peace and tranquility.
